A Poem For My Daughter on the Eve of Her 2nd Birthday

We’ve come a long way, you and I. From that first hospital cry.

I didn’t know how you’d shake me.

I didn’t know how you’d shape me.

I’ve always been a fighter, but I never thought I’d fight like this.

For us, for our family, for a love, for a peace

I have cried many tears over the course of these two years.

I have felt lost and small. I’ve questioned myself through it all.

But then one day I carried you over the mountain, and we made it to the easy part.

To the giggles, the cuddles

Calling me “Mommy”. Holding my hand, holding my heart

I live for it. I live for you.

We have found the light, you and I. I hold you tight, you and I.

I will always fight for you and I.
